A fatal accident occurred in the Town of Berlin early Tuesday morning as the effects of Hurricane Sandy were beginning to subside here. Two Candidates For Hoosick Highway Superintendent

The only two local candidates running in the election next Tuesday are Bill Shiland III and Louis Schmigel. They are vying for the remaining one year of the term of Town of Hoosick Highway Superintendent. The vacancy came about with the unexpected retirement of former Highway Superintendent Bill Shiland, Jr. in August. Shiland held the job for 25 years. Petersburgh Budget Heading Towards A 5% Tax Levy Increase

Although the Petersburgh budget for 2013 has not been finalized, the Board has held two budget workshops and appears to be heading toward a budget that would increase the tax levy by about 5%. The budget as it stood at the end of the second budget workshop was slightly below a 5% increase. The most recent draft shows an increase slightly above 5%

DEC Lists Notice Of Stephentown ZBA Acceptance Of Motocross Environmental Statement

The State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced on its Environmental Notice Bulletin website that the Stephentown Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA), as lead agency, has accepted a Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the Stephentown Motocross Track proposed for a site off of Webster Hill Road. This action occurred at the ZBA meeting on October 4.

Local Scout Participates In The Regional Emergency Medical Organization Drill

On Saturday, October 27, at the Albany County International Airport Michael Zlotnick from Troop 222 volunteered as a victim of an airplane crash. He was one of about 98 other victim volunteers made up of other Scouts, college and high school students and community members. The Regional Emergency Medical Organization Drill (REMO) is one that is required every three years by the FAA and is a good opportunity to evaluate the area’s response to a MCI (Mass Casualty Incident).

Joyce Brewer Honored By HACA

At the annual HACA Volunteer Appreciation Harvest Brunch on October 20 at the First United Presbyterian Church Joyce Brewer was honored as the Volunteer of the Year. Joyce is a Girl Scout Leader, HACA volunteer and organizer of the recent very successful “Fill the Bus” drive for the Food Closet.

The HACA Community Award was presented to the Hoosick Falls Lions Club.

Storm Kiboshes Stephentown Land Use Hearing

Intrepid members of the Stephentown Town Board braved the winds of Hurricane Sandy Monday evening to turn out for a scheduled public hearing on revisions to the Land Use Regulations. Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt showed up along with Councilmen Bill Jennings and John Meekins and Town Clerk Stephanie Wagar. Councilmen Chris Demick and PJ Roder were off on another adventure. There was no public hearing, however, as no members of the public were brave enough – or foolish enough – to venture out during the height of the storm.

New Hoosick Historical Society Book

The Hoosick Township Historical Society is releasing its 32 page book on November 2. The title of this year’s book is Hoosick Falls 125th Anniversary August 12 – 17 1952 The Largest and most Successful Local Celebration. This book recalls the “Brothers of the Brush” and the “Sisters of the Swish.” Men were required to have facial hair and women were required to give up cosmetics. Stephentown Library Veterans Rededication
Stephentown Library Veterans Rededication Celebration will take place on Wednesday, November 7, at 7 pm at the Stephentown Memorial Library.
The present Library had its origin at a meeting of the Stephentown War Council in May, 1946, when Lewis Griffin presented plans for the formation of a library to honor the local men and women who had served in the armed forces in the two world wars.
