Timber Harvesting And Chestnut Restoration Tour

The public is invited to attend a special two part forestry event on Saturday, June 16, starting at 10 am at 231 Brainard Road, Averill Park to see how locally grown timber is sustainably harvested on the Rensselaer Plateau.  This logging operation is managed by LandVest for the Forestland Group (former Cowee property). The harvest is being done by a local contractor and is intended to increase growth on residual crop trees while also starting a new forest of oak, pine and hemlock. Memorial Day Celebrated In Hoosick Falls

The Hoosick Falls Memorial Day Parade had it all. There were the American Legion, politicians, flags galore, great bands, sharp looking fire companies, plenty of fire trucks, floats, fancy and antique cars, candy for the kids, boy scouts, girl scouts, 4-H’ers, dancers and horses The HFCS baseball team rode in a fancy carriage. The team is playing for the Section Championship on Thursday. Best of all, it was a nice long parade.

Suspect In Area Burglaries Is Arrested

After a month long burglary investigation, Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Investigators arrested Keith E. Gates, 25, of Church Street, Hoosick Falls. Gates is charged with Burglary Second Degree and Grand Larceny Fourth Degree, both are felonies. The arrest is in connection with a residential burglary that occurred on Tory Hill Road in Pittstown in April. Reportedly, jewelry valued at $1,800 was taken. It has not been recovered to date.

Grafton’s Dickinson Hill Fire Tower Is Being Restored

The Dickinson Hill Fire Tower in Grafton is being restored by the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park, and they are doing a wonderful job. The Fire Tower is almost 100 years old. So far the stair boards, cab flooring, stair raisers, window bars and the X braces on the tower have been replaced by Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park and Dave Vana LLC Fire Tower Restoration. RPI Honors Stephentown Resident For Excellence In Counseling

Stephentown resident Burt Swersey was recognized for outstanding service to students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s 206th Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 26. Swersey, a longtime senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering, was selected as the 38th recipient of the prestigious David M. Boy Scout Troop 222 Visits Battleship

The boys from Boy Scout Troop 222 went on an adventure to Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA, aboard the battleship USS Massachusetts, BB59, “The big Mamie,” on Saturday, May 19, The Troop has been planning this trip for two years. The trip included staying overnight aboard the USS Massachusetts in the same bunks as the original WW II sailors and crew. The boys toured the ship and museum and a destroyer and a submarine that were moored alongside the battleship.
