Another Truck Crash On Route 7

The Hoosick Fire Department was called to an accident on Route 7 at 5:45 pm Friday, April 1. Some joke! A box style refrigerated produce truck rolled over on the driver’s side in the exact spot where the propane tanker went off the road on Monday, March 28. “The truck stayed on the road this time,” said Hoosick Fire Chief Bill Rifenburgh. The driver was okay and refused treatment, the Chief added. This time they were able to keep one lane open for alternating traffic, and the road was cleared by 9 pm.

Berlin Lumber Price Drops $25k

On Thursday, March 31, the attorney for the sellers of the Berlin Lumber Property in Cherry Plain contacted Berlin Town Attorney Don Tate with the news that the sellers would donate $25,000 towards the purchase price of the property that many Berliners hope will be the new municipal center if the Board will drop all its contingency requirements and vote at its April 14 Town Board meeting to proceed with the purchase. If the Board delays the purchase again, as it did at the March meeting, the sellers indicated “that they would walk away” from the deal, according to Berlin Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger. The donation would drop the purchase price from $499,500 to $474,500.

SMA Auction Raises $30,000

A good-sized crowd filled the Saint Mary’s Academy gym Saturday evening, April 2, for the school’s annual auction. The bidding was wild in some instances, especially when it came to items made by students in the various SMA classes. In some instances a bidder walked away with a real bargain and in other cases the bidding went sky high! One hundred and twenty-five items were auctioned, ranging in value from $45 to $2,600. There were also several silent auction items that went for a pretty penny. The evening was a great success. There were plenty of delicious refreshments and SMA alumni socializing.

Maple Season Ends

Dick Ogden, his brother Walter and his son Dick have finished boiling maple sap into syrup for this year. The senior Dick Ogden said their boiling season was 31 days this year, from the beginning of March to April 4. Other producers are still boiling, he said, though he expects by mid-week this week, weather-wise, it will be the end of it for all the syrup makers.

The Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), represented by two local Berlin youths, Courtney Kellar (grade 9) and Jackson Burhans (grade 7), were recently presented with 11 beautiful hand made baby quilts donated by the Grafton Quilters in support of the students’ current project.

Jazz For Kids And Families At The Chocolate Festival!

Bebop for Babies? “Take Five” for Toddlers?  On Saturday, April 9 at 12:30 pm The Mother Goose Jazz Band brings jazz to children and families at The Chocolate Festival in The Washington Avenue Armory in Albany.  The Mother Goose Jazz Band, led by Director/saxophonist Josh Greenberg will be performing with an All Star line up including: Gene Garone – drums, David Gleason – piano, Mike Lawrence – bass, Cathy Olsen – lead vocals and Ken Olsen – trombone.  In addition, the group features a multi-talented youth chorus that sings, plays instruments and performs skits.  Youth Chorus Members are from Berlin Central Schools and St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls.
