Stephentown Town Board Action – Bridges To Somewhere

Bridges was the hot topic at the Stephentown Town Board meeting Monday evening. Town officials are concerned that the Town could soon be faced with huge costs for repairing or replacing six bridges that the County says it is responsible for. Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt put this in the context of the woeful state of infrastructure nationwide, saying that governments at all levels have been “robbing Peter to pay Paul, and we are no different.”

Addressing High Rates Of Alcohol And Drug Abuse In The BCSD

At a breakfast meeting in Berlin last Thursday, February 4, community leaders heard some dismal reports about drug and alcohol abuse among our teens and pre-teens and some advice on organizing to counteract the problem. The meeting, held at the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church Hall and organized and sponsored by the TRACS Coalition (Together Reducing Alcohol and drugs in our Communities), drew about 25 interested people from the communities of Grafton, Petersburgh, Berlin and Stephentown.

Correction In DARE Graduation Story

In the story on the DARE graduation ceremonies at Berlin Elementary School (February 5) we reported that Joann Popov provided a solo trumpet accompaniment to the singing of “We are the Future.” In fact it was Ioann Popov and Michael Zlotnick who provided a trumpet duet. John Edward Longo Graduates From SUNY Oneonta

John Edward Longo of West Stephentown was one of 263 students recently honored by the State University of New York College at Oneonta for completion of their requirements for graduation in the Fall 2009 semester. The December 6 recognition ceremony, which was attended by over 1,000 guests, was hosted by College President Nancy Kleniewski and was held in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. Longo earned a BA in Music Industry.

Stephentown Woman Volunteers At Olympics

Debbie Pentak, a resident of Garfield Road in Stephentown, is off to Vancouver on Friday for the Winter Olympics. She won’t be competing as an athlete but will be helping out the Vancouver Organizing Committee as a volunteer. There’s no pay for this, but the experience, she said “is priceless.”
