New Lebanon And Stephentown Assess Flood Damage

The state of emergency in Stephentown ended Monday evening but was extended for an indefinite period in New Lebanon. As of Wednesday this week the towns were still trying to assess the extent of the damage caused by last week’s flood.

Celebrating The Hudson 100 Years Ago

This is the year of Hudson 400 – the celebration of 400 years since Henry Hudson’s exploration of the river that bears his name and Samuel de Champlain’s exploration further north and 200 years since Robert Fulton’s maiden voyage up the Hudson in the first commercially successful steamboat. In another celebration 100 years ago, New Yorkers pulled out all the stops commemorating the 300th and 100th anniversaries respectively of those events. Renowned Native American Singer To Perform At Stephentown PowWow

Joanne Shenandoah’s Oneida name is Tekaliwah-kwa, which means in English, “She sings.” She sings, in fact, all over the world – a most fitting name for one dubbed “the most critically acclaimed Native American singer of her time” by the Associated Press. Neil Young has called her “one of the finest tributes to Native American music and culture.”

Main Roads Closed – A State Of Emergency Declared

An estimated three to five inches of rainfall on Wednesday caused widespread flooding and road closures in northern Columbia County and southern Rensselaer County. A state of emergency was declared Wednesday evening in the towns of Stephentown, Nassau and New Lebanon, with travel being limited to emergency vehicles and immediate area residents.

Stephentown Powwow Will Honor Veterans

The theme this year of the 4th Annual Rock Rattle and Drum Powwow and Spirit On The Mountain Music Festival, to be held at Gardner’s Field in Stephentown on August 7, 8 and 9, is “America – Fly Like an Eagle, Forever Free – Honoring our Veterans, Healing Our Warriors.” Besides being an important Native American festival, it is shaping up to be a significant event honoring and serving veterans of all sorts.
