Western Festival & Championship Rodeo

The  Schaghticoke Fairgrounds is proud to present a Western Festival and Championship Rodeo on Saturday, June 5. Gates will open at 3 pm for a country dance party and line dance lessons hosted by WGNA’s own Kevin Richards. The Championship Rodeo, produced by Painted Pony, will begin at 7 pm. The rodeo events include Bareback, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc, Tie-Down Roping, Ladies Barrel Racing and Bull Riding. This is fun for the whole family. Grafton Lakes And Cherry Plain State Parks Kick Off Summer Season

Two local state parks will kick off their summer season on Memorial Day weekend, opening for boating, hiking and countless other recreational opportunities.  Cherry Plain State Park opens for camping and day use, on weekends only, starting Saturday, May 29, with swimming beginning in July.  Grafton Lakes State Park is currently open daily from 8 am to dusk, and the swimming season begins May 29.

National Trails Day Volunteers Needed

National Trails Day is the perfect opportunity to help clean up local parks. On Saturday, June 5, the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park and Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center will be hosting the Seventeenth Annual National Trails Day – the nation’s annual celebration of trails. Both parks invite volunteers of all ages to help clean up and improve trails on Saturday morning and indulge in the trail activities they enjoy most in the afternoon.

Petersburgh Turkey Shoot

The Petersburgh Rod and Gun Club will be holding a Spring Turkey Shoot on May 16 and May 23 at 12 noon. The Club is located on Scriven Road. Spend an exciting afternoon with your family. There will be homemade chili, hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, homemade pies, soft drinks and much more. We are holding a summer-wide 50/50 raffle will have some other raffles those days. Shotguns and .22 rifles only, no 10 gauge shotguns.

Tree Planting In The Rain

On Saturday afternoon, May 8, a group of hearty volunteers planted over 200 trees around the perimeter of the new Rensselaer Land Trust Hoosic River Fishing and Boating Access Site on Route 67. The launch area is 1.4 miles east of Buskirk, just past Beck Road or one half mile west of Eagle Bridge on Route 67. The tree planting workday was done in partnership with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Though many public officials were invited to the event, none chose to participate in the rainy weather.

A Spring Wildflowers Walk

A leisurely walk on “Spring Wildflowers: Identification and Folklore” will be held at the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center on Sunday, May 16, beginning at 10 am. The walk will focus on identification and folklore of spring flowers and plants. The event is free and pre-registration is encouraged, but not required.
