The market value of the Stephentown and Grafton Elementary Schools has been determined to be zero. At a sparsely attended public hearing Tuesday evening on the 2012-13 Berlin School District budget and the upcoming May 15 voting, Business Manager William Burke noted that the property appraisal reports had been received from the Bauer Appraisal Group of Albany and posted on the District’s website at Berlincentral.org.

Rensselaer County Legislature – May 2012

Honoring Joan Rogers
In March the Rensselaer County Legislature passed a resolution memorializing Joan Rogers of Hoosick Falls. She died on January 22, 2012. At Tuesday’s session of the Legislature nine members of the extended family of Joan Rogers appeared in the well of the Legislature to receive copies of the resolution honoring her. District Five Legislators Stan Brownell and Lester Goodermote, who represent the towns of Stephentown, Berlin, Petersburgh, Grafton, Hoosick and the Village of Hoosick Falls, made the presentation.

Village of Hoosick Falls Board – New Building Inspector

During the regular meeting of the Hoosick Falls Village Board on Tuesday, May 8, the Board left the room for a short executive session. When they returned they voted unanimously to appoint Edward Holland of Cossayuna as Building Inspector for the Village. Holland’s part time position will be 24 hours a week, with a 90 day probationary period.

Speaking at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Monday evening, Clara Barton (alias historic interpreter Phyllis Chapman) gave a riveting and entertaining talk about her battlefield experience in the “late Great War of the Rebellion.” Born and raised near Worcester, MA, Barton was drafted as a teacher at the age of 15. Having learned to deal successfully and non-violently with unruly boys, she much later took a job in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Patent Office just before rebel guns fired on Fort Sumter.
