The Board reviewed the materials it had received from the Hoosick Zoning Board of Appeals regarding a scrap metal recycling facility planned for two of the original Bennington Paperboard buildings and the one mobile unit office located on Route 67 in Walloomsac.

St. Stanislaw Society Celebrates 100 Years

The St. Stanislaw Society (The Polish Hall) began 100 years ago as an organization made up of Catholic males of Polish descent. The “Polish Hall” was a place for members to hear the language of their homeland, to maintain Polish traditions and to socialize. The St. Stanislaw Society Women’s Auxiliary was active and supportive as well. Over the years the Society has changed with the times. While the organization still remembers the customs of Poland and maintains St. Stanislaw, the Bishop, as the guardian of the Society, it has transformed itself into a service organization that provides a social atmosphere for any adult who wishes to become a member. Today the organization has a membership of almost 600 people in 11 states. Commemorating The Patriots Of The Walloomsac Battle For Bennington

On Thursday, August 16, a small group gathered at the highest point of the Bennington Battlefield in Walloomsac to commemorate the 235th Anniversary of that battle. Event chairman John Sheaff, President of the Walloomsac Battle Chapter, National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, told the gathering, “I hate war.” He went on to say that to commemorate with a ceremony was to honor and to remember those patriotic people who sacrificed for us. “We are not honoring the battle, we are honoring the people who fought that battle,” he concluded.

St. Stanislaw Society Annual Clam/Steak Bake

The St. Stanislaw Society on Mechanic Street in Hoosick Falls is sponsoring its annual clam/steak bake on Sunday, September 2, from 1 to 7 pm. Hamburgers, sausages and hot dogs will be served from 1 to 3 pm to complement the Manhattan clam chowder and raw clams, served until gone!
The main bake includes three dozen steamers (available earlier, too), steak, baked potato and fresh corn on the cob.  Beer, soda and water are also included. Great lobster and 50/50 raffles add to the fun of the day!
DJ John Woodell will entertain from 4 to 7 pm. Member price is still only $30, $35 for nonmembers. Tickets are available for purchase at the Polish Hall, 686-7810. The first 50 sold earn a free lobster raffle ticket too!  With only 100 for sale, don’t be left out!

Bring Your Happy Feet To The Great Schaghticoke Fair

March, skip or dance your way into the great Schaghticoke Fair, Wednesday, August 29, through Monday, September 3. The first ever fair-wide theme will be introduced at the 193rd annual fair. The idea was originated by Homemaking Superintendent, Marilou Town, and Flowers Superintendent, Nancy O’Donnell. The idea of having a fair-wide theme originated in the Family Living Center last year when creative exhibits and entries were displayed. With support from other building superintendents the concept quickly caught on and throughout the week of the fair, there will be Happy Feet signage displayed all over the various buildings and barns. A scavenger hunt for the children will take place daily with information provided at the Family Living Center.

Hoosick Town Board Action – Highway Superintendent Resigns

A letter of resignation from Town of Hoosick Highway Superintendent Bill Shiland was read at the regular meeting of the Town Board on August 13. Councilman Louis Schmigel wanted to discuss a replacement. Supervisor Keith Cipperly responded that since Shiland had asked the Board in January to appoint Charles Thurber as Deputy Supervisor, he saw no reason that Thurber shouldn’t automatically take over the job until the end of the year. “Bill has confidence in him,” said Cipperly. When asked, Thurber said he had worked for the Highway Department for 17 years.

Hoosick Artist To Exhibit Paintings In Cambridge

In this show closely related tonalities are used to create a sense of atmosphere. The goal is works that meet traditional standards and address a contemporary vision.
