The keynote speaker for the 2010 HACA Volunteer Appreciation Brunch will be Rev. Dr. Thomas Azar, Interim Pastor at First Baptist Church, Hoosick Falls. Rev. Azar grew up in New York City where he attended Hunter College. Following a powerful spiritual rebirth experience he attended Chandler School of Theology, receiving a Masters Degree in 1982 and a Doctor of Ministry in 1986 from Emory University in Georgia. In 1998 he completed an MA in Journalism from Marquette University in Wisconsin.

Incident On The Plank Road

A man with a gun threatening to commit suicide caused quite a stir on the Plank Road in Berlin last Friday afternoon, resulting in the road being closed down for some time. Lebanon Valley Speedway Owner Files Lawsuit Against New Lebanon

Howard Commander, owner of the Lebanon Valley Speedway, has filed a lawsuit against the Town of New Lebanon. The lawsuit comes after the Town’s Zoning Enforcement Officer and Zoning Board informed Commander that he must register his parking area as a campground. Formerly, RV campers were permitted to park overnight on the Speedway’s premises. But New York State sanitary code 7-3.1(b) defines a campground as “any parcel…of land including buildings or other structures…where five or more campsites are available for temporary or seasonal overnight occupancy.” The lawsuit will determine whether the Speedway constitutes a campground. If it does, then Commander must apply for a campground permit and comply with a number of State and Town regulations.

At Petersburgh Town Court on April 27, Jeff Collins of Brunswick was brought before Town Justice Paul Montgomery on charges of dumping garbage by the side of the road in Petersburgh.
The garbage was found by the side of Avery Hill Road. Petersburgh Town Highway Superintendent Ray Harrison said garbage is often dumped on that road, which comes off of Route 2 and has only one house on it. The Petersburgh highway crew found the garbage and had to pick it up. An animal had gotten into it and scattered it all around.

Grafton Fire Department And Auxiliary Installation

It was a beautiful Grafton night as Graftonites assembled in the VFW Hall for the 66th Annual Fire Department Installation Dinner on Saturday, May 1. The evening started with a delicious dinner catered by Juliano’s from Wynantskill.
After dinner the ceremony began. Cyril Grant swore in the officers of the Grafton Fire Department and the Ladies Auxiliary. Grant thanked Grafton for having him and for the wonderful evening.

It Takes A Village…

On Saturday, April 24, Wood Park was filled with uniformed boys and girls and their families ready to start another Hoosick Youth Baseball and Softball season, and some Tee Ball, too. They walked from the Park to the fields, ready for action. On the major league field this year there is a new dirt infield and a new scoreboard in the outfield. The softball field also received a face-lift with an electronic scoreboard and some much needed improvements to the steps and stands.

It is with great concern that I have followed the events unfolding within our School District in the last five years. I was greatly disturbed when our former school superintendent and former business manager first unveiled their plans to close Grafton and Stephentown Elementary Schools as part of an attempt to save money, as well as perform much needed repairs and updates at our other two District schools. To the editor:
I am writing this as a community member. I have great concerns regarding articles that have been presented and printed in the Eastwick Press. Depending on whom is hosting the conversation, the information that is given to the Community has been fiction and or the truth distorted. Famous one-liners that say nothing however can mean a lot. When I was sworn in as a Board Member, Bev Stewart and Tom Morelli requested that we be honest and open with the community. I was and am – for the more the community is involved in the School decisions the better our School District is and can become.

Letter To The Editor – Taxes Are The Issue
Dear Editor,
I am keeping the children out of this letter, because we have some great teachers, bus drivers and staff and I know that our kids will be safe and get a good education. The BIGGER issue right now is TAXES and what we are paying for! Do we really have a choice? Why is there no trust in our District leaders? Well, we can take a brief walk through history to see clearly why.
