Letter To The Editor – Outrage At Unilateral Decisions

Dear Eastwick Press:
I am writing to express my outrage that the Interim Superintendent of the Berlin School District, along with the School Board, have unilaterally decided to close Grafton Elementary without a town vote. Is this even legal?
How does one go about challenging this decision? I do not believe that the Interim Superintendent was given the powers to close a school, nor do I believe that the Board of Education included the valley when they met at a supposed “budget meeting” and voted to close Grafton.

Letter To The Editor – An Issue Of Sovereignty?

To the Editor:
As a past Town Justice, Councilman and Planning Board Chair of the Town of Grafton, it is with great pride that I applaud and commend the recent action taken by the current Town Board, more specifically with regard to the resolution by Councilman Edward Fredricks and the unanimous vote by the Board opposing the NYS State Dept. of Environmental Conservation’s designation of the Rensselaer Plateau as a Forest Legacy Area.

Letter to the Editor,
I remember years ago, walking on a street in New York City and seeing a well dressed woman picking up litter.  A passerby commented on her noble act, and she said “This is my home; I want it to be clean.”  This statement has always stuck with me.

ERC Celebrates Earth Day

On Saturday, May 1, the ERC Warehouse on Route 22 was abuzz with Earth Day activities. Youngsters were making craft projects from recycled materials and Beatrice Green the Recycling Queen encouraged visitors to “remember the three Rs, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” There were free raffle items and plenty of lovely “gently used” items for sale.

Women On A Mission

The women of the Cancer Services Program of Rensselaer County are on a mission – to detect cancer early and get treatment for those who need it. Program Manager Aimee Pachucki said they have been driving all over Rensselaer County and discovering the back roads in the Eastern part of the County, meeting lots of people and trying to get the word out that cancer screening is easy and free and it saves lives.

Introduction to Grant Research Online

Stephentown Memorial Library (SML) announces two sessions of the workshop, “Introduction to Grant Research Online,” May 11 at 2 pm and May 25 at 7 pm. These one hour workshops will provide a  step by step guide to using the Foundation Center Online’s database of almost 100,000 grant-giving  foundations and corporations. SML is one of only 400 libraries in the country that provide free access to this “gold standard”  grant seeking resource.

Hoosick Grange had game night and skits night under the direction of Marion Cipperly. Marion was in charge of the program. She had many prizes for the games. Flower Basket And Plant Sale

The Berlin FCCLA will be holding a Hanging Flower Basket and Plant Sale this weekend, just in time for Mother’s Day on Friday, May 7, from 4 to 7 pm and Saturday, May 8 from 9 am to noon in the parking lot at Eagle Energy, Rt. 22, in Berlin. Cheyenne Seel will be heading to Chicago in July to compete on the National Level and some of the proceeds from this sale will help cover her expenses. If you’re in the market for some beautiful plants, please stop by and see Cheyenne.
