Hoosick Town Board Action – April 2010

The regular monthly Town of Hoosick Board meeting took place this past Monday, April 12, in the Hoosick Falls Armory with Supervisor Keith Cipperly calling the meeting to order at 7 pm. After the Pledge of Allegiance the minutes of last month’s Board meeting were approved. Councilmen Louis Schmigel, Mark Surdam, Bob Ryan and Jeff Wysocki were present, along with Town Clerk Sue Stradinger and the town attorney.
The Town Clerk’s report was accepted with 21 death certificates being of note. The Assessor’s report, by Tony Rice, was in order.

Open House Regarding The Future Of Dougherty Corner

Alex Koks is anxious to receive input from the community regarding his plans for the vacant lot on the corner of Main and John Streets. Until recently Koks had planned to build a bed and breakfast on the vacant lot. The B&B was to include a reception area and restaurant on the first floor and guest rooms on the second and third floor. However, with the vacancy of the Upsy Daisy floral shop in his adjoining building, he is considering a change of plans, and he wants to share his ideas with the community.

The Berlin Limner

Matthew McKeeby, The Berlin Limner, will be the guest speaker at the April 19 meeting of the Taconic Valley Historical Society. A limner is simply an artist or painter. The term has come to be used specifically in reference to painters in the North American Colonies who worked during the 18th and 19th centuries. Limners once traveled the countryside providing any and all painting services.

Consuming Locally Grown Food Is The Subject Of Earth Day Reading

Celebrate Earth Day at the New Lebanon Library with author Amy Cotler. On April 22 at 7 pm Cotler will read from  and discuss her book The Locavore Way: Discover and Enjoy the Pleasures of Locally Grown Foods, a hands-on guide to becoming someone who seeks out and savors local foods. Following the discussion, Cotler will sign copies of her book. Light, locally grown refreshments will follow.

St. Mary’s Academy Spring Auction

St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls is holding its Annual Spring Auction on Saturday, April 17, at the school at 4 Parsons Avenue. Priceless works of art created by the students will be up for bid as well as a Queen Natural Form Mattress Set from WCW, Mets baseball tickets for the June 6 game against the Florida Marlins, 3-day accommodations on Martha’s Vineyard, brunch for 4 at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, autographed jerseys from Donovan McNabb, Chris Pronger and Andre Iguodala, season passes to Hathaway’s Drive-In in North Hoosick and much more! New Lebanon Book Group Meetings

The New Lebanon Book Group has selected Little Bee by Chris Cleave for its next discussions. The book, which follows the aftermath of a horrific encounter experienced by a young teenager and a British magazine editor on a beach in Nigeria, will be discussed twice – on Sunday, April 18, at 11 am at Hitchcock House B & B on Route 22 in New Lebanon and again on Thursday, May 6, at 7 pm at the New Lebanon Library, 550 Route 20 in New Lebanon.
Recommended by the Library Journal for all libraries and book clubs, Little Bee is filled with humor, dramatic tension and moral dilemmas that provide much fodder for discussion. Prize winning author Chris Cleave was short-listed for the prestigious Costa Award for Best Novel for Little Bee.

Penny Whistles In Poestenkill

The Poestenkill Historical Society will meet Tuesday, April 27, at 7:30 pm in the Poestenkill Town Hall on Rt. 351. The Society will host Marilee Urbanczyk who will be playing Dutch Folk music and will present a program on Penny/Tin Whistles. The term penny whistle was coined on the streets of Dublin in the late 1500s because of the whistles prevalence among the beggars and vagabonds in Ireland.
Refreshments will be provided after the program. The public is welcome, free of charge, to this program. For directions, call Patricia at 283-5223.
