Major Drug Bust In Stephentown

The area around Losty Road and Southard Road in Stephentown is normally pretty quiet and peaceful. But around 4 am on the morning of April 30 things got noisy and chaotic in a hurry as various elements of law enforcement staged a raid on a house at the intersection of those roads. Neighbors reported lights and noise, choppers overhead and numerous police vehicles storming around the area.

Stephentown Planning Board Approves Motocross Variances In Split Vote

The Stephentown Planning Board has voted to advise the Zoning Board of Appeals to approve variances allowing a Motocross track in a residential zone. At a meeting Wednesday evening following a lengthy discussion of salient issues, the Board voted 3-2 to issue an advisory opinion to the ZBA that they approve Howard Commander’s application for a use variance for his proposed Motocross park. The project is proposed for a vacant field off of Webster Hill Road. In a separate vote they again voted 3-2 to advise approving also a setback area variance for an earthen berm proposed to be constructed on the west side of the park along a neighboring property line. The berm is intended to cut down on noise from the motocross bikes.

Taste Of Hoosick Raises $5,842 For Food Pantry

Chowders, roast beef, pizza, pasta, wings, subs, shrimp, ice cream, cookies and much, much more were available for the sampling at the Hoosick Area Church Association Taste of Hoosick at St. Mary’s Academy on Sunday, May 5. While tasting the delicious food, folks enjoyed an excellent musical program presented first by Bill Gaillard and The Stardusters, followed by The Word of Life Singers from The Word of Life Bible Institute at Schroon Lake and winding up with show tunes by Bill Brown on piano and Martha von Schilgen on violin.

State Of The Art Pittstown Town Garage Opens

After more than 15 years in the planning and three different sets of building plans, an Open House was finally held at the new Pittstown Town Garage on Route 67 in Johnsonville on Saturday, April 27. Set up on a hill and back from the road, the 11,956 square foot building sits next to a 3,840 square foot salt shed and eight rows of 50 kw of solar panels. It is an impressive arrangement. The salt shed was required to prevent runoff into nearby waterways. It was built in two and a half weeks.

The History Of Cowee At The Stephentown Historical Society

Berlin Town Historian Sharon Klein spoke at the Stephentown Heritage Center Monday evening of Willis Judson Cowee and the company he founded and the many community contributions they made in various ways over the course of the history of the Town of Berlin. These included the Water Company, the Heat, Electric & Power Company, the Free Town Library and the generous support extended to the Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

Boy Scout Troop 222 Helps The PVMCC Raise Funds For the Veteran’s Honor Roll

On April 26 Boy Scout Troop 222 of Petersburgh provided Scouts and a leader to assist the members of the Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center (PVMCC) serve a lasagna dinner to the public. The Scouts helped set up tables and chairs, worked with the cooks to serve over 100 dinners, cleared tables and cleaned up afterwords. Local Legislator Stan Brownell and his wife stopped by along with many other elected officials and Veterans from the area to support the cause and enjoy a wonderful lasagna dinner.

Derby Club Celebration

Eighty-seven years ago a group of Hoosick Falls guys who hung around the American House bet on the Kentucky Derby. Lo and behold they won! The next question was what to do with the winnings. And the Derby Community Club, a not-for-profit organization, was formed. That race money and other contributions is the basis for the support still offered local organizations and individuals today. The Berlin Memorial Day Parade

The American Legion Taconic Valley Post #937 will be hosting a Memorial Day Parade in the Town of Berlin on Monday, May 27, at 11 am. All interested marchers should assemble between the Baptist and Catholic Churches on Main Street at 10:30 am.
Refreshments will be provided for all parade participants at the Watipi building after the parade.
Questions on the parade should be directed to the American Legion Taconic Valley Post at 658-9397.
