Berlin 7 Day Baptist Church: The Fifties Are Still Nifty

The evening of Friday, February 11, at the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church was reminiscent of the 1950s era. The atmosphere was created by a black and white checkered diner complemented with red, high top tables and swivel stools, windows glowing with dancing paper silhouettes and nostalgic items variously placed highlighting the juke box and checked dance floor. Various adults and teen staff were dressed in poodle skirts and saddle shoes, letter sweaters, pedal-pushers with scarves and leather jackets.

Downed Tree May Cause Flooding In Stephentown

In an otherwise pretty much cut and dried Town Board meeting Monday, the bills told the story of the heavy toll the severe weather conditions this winter are taking on taxpayers’ money. The Stephentown Town Board audited and approved claims in the amount of $58,581 from the General Account and $22,547 from the Highway Account. Of that, over $30,000 was weather related in some way, including plowing, materials for dealing with ice and snow and repairing overtaxed equipment.

Water Warning During Cold Weather

Cold weather has been upon us in this New Year and now Spring is not that far away. The Stephentown Fire Department is warning people of the dangers of unstable ice and open water on streams, rivers, ponds and lakes.  The heavy snow pack has insulated the ice and it may be more dangerous than you think.

Hoosick Planning Board Action – Quackenbush Resigns

At the Tuesday, February 22, meeting of the Town of Hoosick Planning Board Jim Dunigan announced that Town Supervisor Keith Cipperly had received a letter of resignation from Planning Board Chairman Everett Quackenbush effective immediately. Quackenbush is resigning for “personal reasons.” Dunigan will once again be Chairman. The Board approved the reappointment of Stanton King as Planning Board Attorney.

West Sand Lake Resident To Be New York Army Guard’s Senior Enlisted Soldier

Command Sgt. Major Frank Wicks Will Advise Adjutant General On All Matters Concerning Soldiers
New York Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major Frank Wicks, a West Sand Lake resident, has been picked as the next New York National Guard State Command Sergeant Major by Major General Patrick Murphy, the Adjutant General of New York.
Wicks, a combat veteran, will replace Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Van Pelt, who retires in May 2011 after more than ten years in the position.
