There will be a Music/Wine Festival on September 14 from 1 to 4 pm to benefit Warm the Children at Why Not Wine, 5152 Rt. 7 in Hoosick. The requested donation is $10.
Sample wines from Coyote Moon Vineyard and Swedish Hill Vineyard will be available. Live music will be performed by local Tim Blakeney.

Cheney Library Storytime
Cheney Library will begin a Fall Storytime for preschool children and their caregivers. It starts on Tuesday, September 24, at 10 am and ends 8 weeks later on November 12. The stories will center around classics such as “The Three Little Pigs,” “Eensy, Weensy Spider” and “This Old Man.” There will be stories, songs, crafts, and snacks. This is a great time to be with your little one and have loads of fun. Come and join us starting September 24.
The Cheney Library is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 8 pm, Tuesday from 10 am to 5 pm, Friday from 11 am to 4 pm and Saturday 8 am – 1 pm.
McGuire Returns To Hubbard Hall “In Concert”
Kevin McGuire, Broadway veteran and founding artistic director of The Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall, will return to Cambridge “In Concert” Saturday, September 28, at 8 pm. His accompanist for the program, ranging from classic and contemporary show tunes to pop standards, will be David Tolley.

Miss Olivia’s Dancers Perform At The Hoosick Falls Health Center

Twenty-three of Miss Olivia’s students from the British School of Ballet in Hoosick Falls recently put on a one hour dance recital for the residents at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls. The dance numbers consisted of classical ballet, lyrical, Irish step dance, tap and gymnastics. The dancers ranged in age from four to 20 years old.

It’s Not Too Late To Support The Karen McGovern Fund
The annual Karen McGovern Volley Ball Tournament benefitting the Karen McGovern Fund will take place on Saturday, September 7, at 10 am at The Sand Bar.

The requested donation is $30 per participant or $175 per team. Teams may consist of four persons including one woman or 5/6 persons including two woman – adults only. Each participant receives a T-shirt, a buffet lunch and keg beer.

The cost is $175, and sponsors are recognized through signage during the tournament.

All donations help support the fund! There are no administrative expenses. Funds are raised throughout the year through bequests, memorials and additional fundraisers including many poker runs organized by Don Armstrong. The committee has selected Don Armstrong as this year’s recipient of the Karen McGovern Award, which will be presented on September 7. Don has been an active supporter of the organization and has demonstrated Karen’s admirable perseverance and strength.
Funds raised help individuals and families currently battling cancer and living in Hoosick and in the surrounding areas. Each year thousands of dollars are raised. Funds help individuals and families with expenses related to their medical condition and provide assistance with purchasing fuel or groceries. The fund also provides assistance to people who need transportation to area hospitals and doctor appointments.

Cheney Library Summer Reading Program Ends Successfully
The Cheney Library in Hoosick Falls finished the 2013 New York State Summer Reading program. Twenty children recorded the amount of time they spent reading this summer for a total of 16,536 minutes. There were eight programs in which the children participated, including one presented by the Tang Museum from Skidmore College.

Sunday Night Bowling Teams Wanted
The Barbecue Recreation Sunday Night Mixed Bowling League is looking for new teams to join. Teams are made up of two men and two women. The League bowls at the Barbecue Recreation Lanes in Hoosick on Sunday nights at 5 pm starting September 8.

Arthur E. Smith Jr.
Hoosick Falls – Arthur E. Smith Jr., 89, died August 29, 2013, after a short illness, surrounded by his family at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls, NY. He had been married to Gwendolyn (McMartin) Smith for 66 years.
Born April 22,1924, in Petersburgh, NY, he was the son of the late Arthur E. Sr. and Grace (Fuller) Smith. He was a lifetime resident of North Petersburgh, NY. Arthur graduated from the Walter A. Wood High School in Hoosick Falls as Salutatorian in the class of 1941. He then started a career as a builder. Many of the homes he built are located throughout the Hoosick and Taconic Valleys. He was an original member of the School Board of the Hoosick Falls Central School in 1956 and served two terms as President. He retired from the School Board in 1975 and from his business in 1991.
Apart from events celebrating his family life, he enjoyed outdoor sports including hunting and fishing. His favorite sports teams were the Boston Red Sox and the Dallas Cowboys.
Survivors, other than his wife Gwendolyn, are his four sons, David from Wellfleet, MA, Daniel and wife Gail of North Petersburgh, Dennis and wife Pam of North Petersburgh and Richard of Hoosick Falls. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In 1963 Arthur and his work crew converted the North Petersburgh schoolhouse into a chapel known as the North Petersburgh Methodist Church. The services for Arthur were held from this chapel on Tuesday September 3, at 12:30 pm. Relatives and friends called at the chapel from 11 am until the service. The burial followed at the Hoosick Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Centers For Nursing and Rehabilitation or the North Petersburgh Methodist Church through the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090.
The family wishes to thank all the professionals at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and all those who provided his excellent care. For persons unable to attend the services the family suggests that they spend time talking with friends and family about an activity Art enjoyed throughout his life.
