“Residents of Rensselaer County can be 100 percent confident of our 911 system,” said County spokesperson Chuck Wojton Wednesday afternoon. “At 9:30 pm on Tuesday,” Wojton said, “the public safety building was struck by lightning, causing radio consoles to fail and 911 lines to be rerouted to TOPS [Verizon’s Telephone Operating Service.]” He added that cellular emergency calls were handled by the State Police or Albany County. “Backup procedures were immediately put in place and all 911 calls were answered.” One of those backup facilities was Hoosick Falls Dispatch.

Walter A Wood Alumni Contribute To Veterans Wall

The Walter A. Wood High School Alumni Association donated $1,937 to the Hoosick Veterans Memorial Wall on July 2. This organization has disbanded since the new alumni group includes graduates from the Hoosick Falls Central School. Janice Tate presented the check to Phil Leonard, a member of the fund raising team for the wall.

Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew In Hoosick Falls

The Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall (TCHH) has announced dates and locations for its upcoming summer tour of The Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare’s definitive comedic take on the battle of the sexes. Public performances will be given at area parks and historic venues, July 17 through July 25. All performances begin at 7 pm and are free.
Brian Foley will direct a cast led by Michael Broadhurst and Rocky Freidman Vargas as Petruchio and Katherine, Shakespeare’s classic romantic protagonists.
Area performances of The Taming of the Shrew will be given at the Park McCullough House (North Bennington, VT) on Saturday, July 17, at the Greenwich Commons (Greenwich, NY) on Tuesday, July 20, at Hildene (Manchester, VT) on Thursday, July 22, at Salem Arts Works (Salem, NY) on Friday, July 23, at Wood Memorial Park, (Hoosick Falls, NY) on Saturday, July 24, and at the Cambridge Guest House (Cambridge, NY) on Sunday, July 25. The rain location for the Cambridge performance is Hubbard Hall.
Patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics to this ideal midsummer, family entertainment tradition.

Hoosick Falls Junior Girl Scouts Earn Bronze Award
Anna Brewer, Katy Gardner, Lexie Gates, Lauren Harrison and Sydney Stowell from Hoosick Falls Junior Troop 1144 have earned their Bronze Award. The Bronze Award is the highest award Girl Scouts in grades four and five can earn. These girls are fifth-graders at Hoosick Falls Central School.

Friday Nights At The Hoosick Area Youth Center
The Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) is pleased to announce a series of Friday night events being offered to area youth this summer. All events are free to attend and are open to members and non-members of HAYC3. Events will take place at the Youth Center, 115 Church Street, Hoosick Falls, on Fridays, July 9 through August 13.

Saint Mary’s Academy Class Of 1960 Reunion
The Saint Mary’s Academy Class of 1960 will be celebrating its 50th reunion on July 10, 2010. The event will be held at the Powers Tavern, Sterup Square, Raymertown, NY, with cocktails at 5:30 pm and dinner at 7 pm. The class is expecting a large turnout.
On July 9 there will be an informal gathering at the Firehouse Restaurant in Hoosick Falls at 8 pm.
Also a Vigil Mass for the deceased members of the class will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church at 4 pm on July 10.
North Hoosick FD Kids Pool Dance
The North Hoosick Fire Department will be holding its Sixth Annual kids pool dance at the Town of Hoosick community pool on Barton Avenue in Hoosick Falls on Friday, July 9. Students in grades four through eight in area schools are invited to attend the festivities which will begin at 7 pm. Students will be able to swim until dark and then dance to music until 10:30 pm. Tickets for the dance can be purchased at the door on the day of the event. The inclement weather date is Friday, July 16. Parents must sign their child out after the dance.

Jeannette Ward
Hoosick Falls – Jeannette “Jean” Ward, 89, passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2010, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center where she had resided since July of 2009. Jean formerly resided at the Wood Park Apartments in Hoosick Falls, NY, and was the wife of the late Richard “Dick” Ward, who died in 1983.
