Battle Of Bennington Commemoration

The Battle of Bennington, fought on August 16, 1777, will be commemorated at the New York State Bennington Battlefield Historic Site on Friday, August 16, starting at 7 pm. The ceremony will be conducted by members of Chapters of the Empire State Society Sons of the American Revolution, The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and other local historical groups in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.  [Read more…] about Battle Of Bennington Commemoration

Letter To The Editor – The Martinezes Make A Difference

To the Editor:
How do you compile a letter of sincere appreciation and thanks to a couple who have made such a huge impact on this community?  How do you possibly put into words how much Dr. and Mrs. Martinez mean to all they have treated, the many families they have delivered a child for, saved a loved one, held a hand and wiped a tear over the countless years of their practice?
We all have stories we could tell of the way this wonderful couple have changed our lives, saving my son, Matt, as a baby during birth, saving my daughter, Stephanie, three times during her childhood, and I’m sure there are many in the community who have similar stories.  They say behind every man is a good woman. In this case beside this great man is a great woman with a kind word and that beautiful smile.  What a perfect team they have made and continue to make.  Thank you doesn’t seem enough, but please know for all you do, have done and continue to do for all of us, you are appreciated and highly thought of. It is only fitting that this honor [Health Care Leadership by SWVTMC] is bestowed upon you.
Our community is a much better place for having the privilege of Dr. and Mrs. Martinez amongst us.  They will never have to ask the question of themselves that many of us do, “Did we make a difference?”  Absolutely, they did, beyond a shadow of a doubt.
We are most fortunate and blessed to have you.  Thank you.

Leah Jo Hyde and Christopher Eli Bush were united in marriage on May 18, 2013. The 1:30 pm country wedding took place at Higher Ground Farm, owned by Eric and Jamie Ziehm, in West Hoosick, NY.
As the groom and his best man, Jeremie Younger, walked down the hill between the horses, the bride’s party emerged from the horse barn and made its way down the aisle between the seats made of bales of hay.

Martha Raleigh Winsten To Visit The Cheney Library

On Saturday, August 17, please come at 11 am and meet Martha Raleigh Winsten at the Cheney Library in Hoosick Falls. Winsten is a local painter/artist/author from Moreau, NY. She has written a wonderful children’s book, Awesome Elijah, which is a true story about a young, rescued steer who is raised by a young girl and winds up at the Saratoga Horse Expo! Elijah lived to be 19 years old.
Winsten will read from her book and will also sing a song she composed about a coyote, accompanied by her guitar. And to top it all off, she will show children how to draw animals. Winsten has painted many famous race horses at the Saratoga track. The Library will provide paper and crayons.
This will be a morning of fun – so please do join us. You can see a picture of Winsten and her book and paintings on our website, www.cheneylibrary.org. Her book is on display, but circulation will not take place until August 17. Winsten will bring books for sale and sign them. Any questions? Learn History At The Cemetery

Learn local Cambridge history with voices from the past at Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge, NY. On August 3 meet at the Cambridge Historical Society at 10 am for brunch, tours and tickets. (This is a $15 fundraiser.) The Society is at 12 Broad Street in Cambridge.
We will proceed to the cemetery about 10:45 to view six re-enactors: Morris Driggriss by Paul Adams, William Watkins by David McNitt, Ruth Davis by Beverly Collamer, Ernest Skellie by Bob Wright, Olive Noteman by Audrey Hall-Seeley and George Law by Conrad Pederson.
