Fire Damages Home On Johnson Hill Road In Hoosick

A fire that began in a hall closet in the home of Frederick and Donna Adler on Johnson Hill Road on Tuesday afternoon, February 15, caused considerable smoke, heat and water damage to the entire building. “When we entered the house we couldn’t see more than a foot in front of us; the smoke was that thick,” said North Hoosick Fire Chief Alan Bornt. Hoosick Town Board Action – Route 7 Problems Persist

High snow banks have added to the already difficult problem of driving onto Route 7 from the Route 22 junction near the new bridge. Highway Superintendent Bill Shiland and Town of Hoosick Board members discussed the issue at the Monday, February 14, Board meeting. They said the intersection has become very dangerous as cars have to creep out into the middle of the road to see oncoming traffic. This added to the concerns the Town already has expressed to the State regarding the intersection.

Town Of Hoosick Rescue Squad Recognition Dinner

The Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad held its 54th Annual Recognition Dinner on February 6 at Theresa’s Restaurant in Hoosick.
Special plaques were awarded to Tanya Brock for five years service, Georgianna Parker for 10 years and Ronald Sampath for 15 years. Special recognition was given to Jerry McAuliffe (the mailman) and his son Jerry. They were made honorary members as they provide a special service to the Squad. North Hoosick – George Wilson, 86, of North Hoosick, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, February 11, 2011, at his residence with his family by his side. Born on February 22, 1924, in Schaghticoke, NY, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Bryant) Wilson. George served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. While serving in the 2nd Battalion, 515th Parachute Infantry Regiment, George achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received several medals and ribbons while participating in the American Theater and European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaigns.

Roof Collapse In Hoosick

According to Pat Bakaitis, the collapse of the roof over his heavy equipment stored on Baby Lane in Hoosick was a loud roar that lasted several seconds Saturday afternoon, February 5. The full extent of the damage to Bakaitis’ equipment won’t be known until the roof is removed. Metered Billing At Last

The Village of Hoosick Falls will finally begin metered water billing. Residents and businesses will see the results with the new billing cycle in August 2011. The cycle is three payments for residential properties, made in August and November of one year and February of the next year, and twice yearly for businesses. The new billing plan was approved at the regular meeting of the Village Board on Tuesday, February 8, after the close of the public hearing on the rates.

Rensselaer County Legislature – Community Spirit Recalled

The family of John “Jack” Dwyer came to the Rensselaer County Legislative Chamber on Tuesday evening to receive copies of the resolution that was passed in his memory at last month’s meeting. Former Hoosick Falls Mayor Don Bogardus accompanied Jack’s son Phillip and his wife Vicki into the well of the Legislature where District 5 Legislators Stan Brownell and Lester Goodermote made the presentation.

Local Girl Scouts Help Extend Thrift Shop Hours

To help get great clothes for great prices into the hands of those who need them, Girl Scouts from local Service Unit #155 will again be opening the Thrift Shop for business on Friday, February 11, from 4 to 8 pm and Saturday, February 12, from 9:30 am to noon. The shop is located at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (second floor) on Main Street, Hoosick Falls.
